This top-down shawl is worked in a simple leaf pattern that is both easy to memorize and easy to work, making the body of the shawl a joy to knit, while the border infuses the piece with a zest that makes this an accessory you’ll reach for again and again. Worked in a heavy fingering weight yarn, it makes a fast and satisfying project, but could be worked in a finer gauge with more repeats to give a more delicate finished piece.
Gauge: 17 sts and 25 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) square in leaf pattern after blocking
Finished Measurements: 56 inches (142 cm) across the top and 28 inches (71 cm) from neck to point.
Yarn Requirements: 550 yards of fingering to sport weight yarn. Sample shown in Reynolds Whiskey in ‘086 – Deep Raspberry’
Needle Size: 4mm (US 6) 24 or 30 inch (61-75 cm) circular or size needed to obtain gauge.

Other Details: This shawl is worked from the neck down. On every right side row, yarn overs on both ends shape the “wings” and paired yarn overs on either side of the center stitch shape the point down the spine. These 4 increases make every right side row longer than the last, so that what started with a few stitches, ends with hundreds. For this reason, you will want to work on a circular needle long enough to comfortably fit all the stitches. This shawl also features a knitted-on border. When the body of the shawl is finished, 17 more stitches are cast on, then the border rows are worked perpendicular to the body rows. As you work the border, you will be knitting one stitch from the body together with one stitch from the border every other row. This creates the border at the same time as you finish the edge of the body. There is no need to bind off the body stitches or to sew a seam to attach the border to the body.
